equethy equethy nameste to the horse! its no longer good enough to just make a shoe fit a deformed painful foot when science has explained why the application of the shoe is the cause of the hoof deformation and subsequent pain. it is no longer ok to just recommend corrective shoeing for conditions that we know have been created by a life in steel shoes and can be reversed by removing the cause. it is not ok, now that there are thousands of cases of successful and documented rehabilitation for conditions such as navicular syndrome, performed by natural hoof care practitioners to not look into the science behind these successes. most of these cases turned to natural hoof care as a last resort for horses already treated with years of traditional farriery/veterinary methods that sadly had failed them. even if you don't agree with me on the need for horses to have natural hoof care, all around us are thousands of horses whose quality of life has already been improved by natural hoof care rehabilitation, and thousands of owners who are happy that they made the change and who are astounded at the improvements they see in their horses biomechanics and attitudes. all around the world there are thousands of people who have moved way outside their comfort zones and taken up a new career in natural hoof care. most of them women. why would so many women take on such a hard and dangerous and male dominated career? because they felt so strongly that someone had to help these horses and the need was not being met by traditional farriery. just look at any equine forum and you will see the passionate debate that ensures when anyone asks why their horse is suffering from hoof problems. it's because those who have seen and participated in these rehabilitations cannot believe that so many horses are still suffering from conditions that can so easily be rectified. in 2002 i read this comment below and was saddened by it. it lead me to explore the entire gammet of horse shoeing and the science behind barefoot horse keeping. of the 1.22 millions equines found around the world no more than 10 percent are clinically sound. some ten percent (12.2 million) are clinically completely and unusuably lame. the remaining 80 percent (97.6 million) are somewhat lame and could not pass a soundness evaluation test. ref american farriers journal nov 2002 v.26 #6 p5. in 2016 i have now seen and know of thousands of amazing rehabilitations done with natural hoof care practices and i am more convinced than ever that we can offer the domestic horse much better hoof care then we do now. this fact makes me sad and frustrated and leads me to ask why are so many who deliver our hoof care still stuck in the 1800's? the internet it such a wonderful resource available to just about everyone now. there are myriads of sites about barefoot horse keeping that explain in detail the benefits to the horse. most linked to even more resources. there are limitless choices to update your knowledge and skills through publications by leading natural hoof care exponents and there are now many many hoof boots that allow the rider to continue using their horse exactly as they did when it was shod. there are opportunities for vets and farriers and horse owners to explore the scientific publications on the latest breakthroughs into the way that the equine hoof stays healthy for life. it's no longer ok to do what we did before. every other aspect of health care even for animals is advancing with technology. why not equine hoof care? with very little effort we can now offer the domestic horse in the 21st century a sound pain free long life instead of waiting for lameness to set in. horses give us so much and get little in return, we owe them at least pain free hooves, not the legacy of crippled feet that we have given their shod ancestors. chrisann ware emt [email protected] below are links to websites with information about the benefits to the horse and owner of barefoot trimming and natural lifestyles. they are not listed in order of preference but merely listed to show a tiny sample of the huge numbers of people who are passionate enough to want to share their knowledge and to change the outcomes for the domestic horse. i hope you enjoy browsing them. the take away message from all this is "why would so many people devote so much time and energy to learning the craft of barefoot trimming then sharing their knowledge if they did not truly believe it important that we rethink our hoof care options now! articles by andrew bowe, australian master farrier & equine podiotherapist - www.barehoofcare.com - andrew has also published a text on laminitis rehabilitation with barefoot techniques and is a director of the australian college of equine podiotherapy www.equinepodiotherapy.com.au hoof sore - barehoofcare australia newsletter - march 2008 what are underrun heels - barehoofcare australia newsletter - july 2008 the effect of environment on horses' hooves - barehoofcare australia newsletter - april 2009 thrush - horses and people magazine - april 2011 hoof wall cracks part 1 - horses and people magazine - june 2011 hoof wall cracks part 2 - horses and people magazine - july 2011 hoof wall cracks part 3 - horses and people magazine - august 2011 laminitis - barehoofcare facts hoof contraction - equine news the ups and downs of club foot - horses and people magazine - november 2011 laminitis recovery - horses and people magazine - march 2012 an inconvenient hoof - horses and people magazine - december 2012 baby feet - horses and people magazine hoofcare for the golden oldies - horses and people magazine the trouble with pony hooves - horses and people magazine - may 2012 laminitis, early intervention crucial - horses and people magazine - march 2013 the truth about breakover - horses and people magazine - april 2013 flat feet - horses and people magazine the thin sole dilemma - horses and people magazine caudal hoof development - horses and people magazine symmetrical hooves - horses and people magazine horses have hooves - horses and people magazine the stallion advantage - horses and people magazine flares and hoof wall separation - horses and people magazine get a grip - horses and people magazine when a horse needs shoes - part 1 - a story with legs - horses and people magazine when a horse needs shoes - part 2 - the set up - horses and people magazine when a horse needs shoes - part 3 - the set up continued - horses and people magazine a tale of two horses - horses and people magazine when a horse needs shoes - part 4 - some advice - horses and people magazine when a horse needs shoes - part 5 - plastic fantastic - horses and people magazine foal hoof management - part 1 - horses and people magazine foal hoof management - part 2 - horses and people magazine the trouble with donkey hooves - horses and people magazine standardbreds unfettered - horses and people magazine seedy toe thrush sharpening hoof knives maintenance trimming for horse owners - horses and people magazine bringing back sexy - horses and people magazine oh no! it's a hoof abscess - horses and people magazine msm and healthy hooves - at the bowker lectures - horses and people magazine tropical depression - horses don't do the tropics - horses and people magazine a career in hoofcare - horses and people magazine lessons from the barefoot rehab centre - horses and people magazine www.barehoofcare.com/chapter1_opt.pdf hoof boots: like to see the large number of people with barefoot horses enjoying their riding with booted hoof protection?
